Is your website overdue for
a redesign? Here's the test
Most business owners wait two years too long to redesign. These are the signs we look for when someone asks whether their site needs work — and the cases where we'd say leave it alone.
The signs that matter
Your site fails on mobile — properly fails, not just 'looks a bit small'. It takes more than three seconds to load. The design visibly dates from a different era of the web. Your contact form gets submissions about things you stopped offering years ago. You're slightly embarrassed to put the URL on a quote. Any two of these and it's time.
The sneaky sign: enquiries dropped
This one's subtle. If traffic is steady but enquiries slid over the last year, the site is usually the leak — not the marketing. People still arrive; they just don't trust what they see enough to call. A redesign that fixes credibility pays for itself in recovered enquiries.
When we'd tell you to wait
If your site ranks well, loads fast and still brings enquiries, a redesign is cosmetic spending. Same if you're about to rebrand — do the brand first. And if the real problem is thin content, redesigning it just gives you prettier thin content. We turn away redesign work when it's the wrong fix, because a happy 'no' client sends us better referrals.
What a proper redesign protects
The biggest risk in a redesign isn't money — it's your Google rankings. Every old URL needs a 301 redirect to its new home or the traffic dies in the move. Any quote that doesn't mention a redirect map is a red flag.
