How much does a website
cost in Australia in 2026?
Honest numbers from a Canberra studio that quotes websites every week — what a site actually costs in Australia, what changes the price, and where the cheap options sting you later.
The short answer
A small business website in Australia costs anywhere from A$500 to A$25,000+. That range is uselessly wide, so here's the realistic breakdown: DIY builders run A$300–600 a year once you add the plan, domain and apps. A freelancer's template site sits around A$800–2,500. A custom-designed site from a studio like ours starts near A$2,400 for something small and goes to A$8,000–12,000 for a full business build. E-commerce starts around A$6,500 and climbs with catalogue size.
What actually moves the price
Page count matters less than people think. The real cost drivers are custom design (a layout built for your content, not a theme), copywriting, integrations (booking systems, CRMs, payment gateways) and how much revision the project needs. A five-page site with proper custom design and copy costs more than a fifteen-page template job — and it should.
Where cheap quotes sting you
The A$500 special usually means a bought theme with your logo dropped in, offshore labour, and a site you don't fully own. We've rebuilt plenty of them. The pattern: the site looks fine for six months, then you need a change, the developer has vanished, and you're paying someone new to untangle a theme nobody documented.
Ongoing costs nobody mentions
Budget A$150–600 a year for hosting and domain, plus whatever maintenance you need. Our maintenance plans run A$120–590 a month, but plenty of businesses do fine with an annual update session. The thing you can't skip: software updates and backups. An unmaintained site is a hacked site, and emergency cleanups cost more than a year of prevention.
How to spend it wisely
Put money into design and copy before features. A simple site that loads fast, reads well and has a clear call to action beats a feature-packed site that confuses people. Ask for a fixed quote in writing, ask who does the work, and ask what happens after launch. If the answers are vague, keep looking.
